Essential Knots

5 basic knots you should know.

Square knot
Two-Half Hitches
bowline
sheet bend
clove hitch

and at one time i was able to tie all of the ones listed below.

what sort of knots do you know?

i trained monkeys to tie knots.. i think i can teach you (with some beer and cattle prods)

i have about a dozen or so books on knots and crack them out on occasion and learn a new one.

I would replace sheet bend with sheep shank. Other than that, agreed.

shrinkage vs joining? why is that.

the bowline is a great knot, I typically use a figure 8 instead since they are usually a little easier to untie after having a load on it.

I like the taughtline for its adjustability.

I use a square knot and bowline for 90% of everything I need a knot for. I know several of the others, and use them occasionally.

shrinkage vs joining? why is that.

I think that there are other, better knots for joining to pieces of rope than the sheet bend....lark's head for one....but more than that, the square knot can be used to join and it is already on the list. None of the original five that you listed afforded you the ability to shrink the rope...and as Hayata's father most correctly asserted, you never cut the rope.

A larks head is not a joining knot, it is like a clove bitch, where it just holds onto an object
