used to be in leagues for what seemed like forever. been bowling since i was 4.
i have had my own ball for most of my life. shoes for the last 10 years.
if you get serious into it, invest in a good ball for your throwing style. good pro shops can help with that. as for shoes.... eh, the ones at dicks sporting goods are just fine. unless you want to pony up 200 for a pair of specialty shoes. but 35 dollar ones will do just fine.
i use a hammer no mercy as my ball for the last 16 years, improved my bag from 145 to 180. mostly for semi dry conditions. a special glow in the black lights for when i bowl lefty (for fun, avg 120). made by dev8.

Im planning on getting a ball. The nights I can find a real nice newer looking ball that feels nice and smooth (unlike the majority that are chipped and scratched) I typically throw like 175-200. The nights I get a shitty ball or have an off night I score noticeably lower. I think a ball will help me a lot.
if you get a ball, start with an entry level ball (around 90ish drilled) something that fits your stlye, colour pallet etc. rotation and ball speed should be taken into account the better more deep you get in. tip, when getting fitted, make sure your thumb hole is a bit larger. simply because your hand will swell as you roll more games in succession.
i have low revs, but high ball speed (been throwing 16lb balls since i was 13, and only now in my mid 30s where I could stand to drop to 14...lol)
if i still lived in the area i would let you try out some used balls to get an idea of what might suit you.
I throw a lighter ball, 13 righty and 12 lefty, about 20mph. Idk if thats normal or what, but it works for me. I went up to 15 and was inconsistent on the throw, and as low as 10 and got no pop even though the throws were super consistently placed.
I did plan on going with the $100 deal for a ball drilled and everything.
UPDATE: I snagged a 14 lbs ball and my own shoes. The pro there watched me bowl and picked a ball based on my style. The first night out was horrendous. I rolled about 80-120 for 5-6 games... I was very confused. I went out again last night and averaged 150.6 for 5 games and felt like I am starting to get a hold of this damn thing. Im planning on getting back out asap. I was a 185 ish avg bowler with a house ball so I can only imagine I will be better at some point with my own shit. It's just a tough learning curve (puns) so far...
need to adjust to the urethane coated ball, as opposed to the plastic house ball.
lane conditions (oil pattern, wet, dry) all play factors into it. once you get the form down it will be small adjustments on the lane (where to stand, what board to hit) before it will click 100%

Idk what my new ball is coated in, but its on the shiner side. Dude said I had plenty of rev and didnt need a super matte ball. Im trying to get out there again soon and keep feeling it out. My last night out with the house ball was avg 192.6 across 5 games. Im pumped to try and be in the 200's once Im used to it.
Lol, the first time I bowled a little over a year ago I bowled in the 30s the first game. I shit you not. By the time I bowled my last game that same night I hit 184 lol. I for some reason picked it up fairly easily.

That's me 100% I either lose miserably or win by a wide margin. I have no rhyme not reason for it.
Same, I went this past Sunday and bowled three games. They were a 94, 114, and 245 lol...
