I'm working on a new build and with that I started thinking about the optics. I use the BUIS with my AR and I'd like to put a Primary Arms or Bushnell red dot up on top with them. I'm curious to know those of you that do this do you co-witness and if so is it set up for absolute or lower 1/3. Here's a quick video.

When I get a red dot I plan on keeping the sights down. My eyes dont do well with them in my line of sight and it makes it hard to keep both eyes open.

No. BUIS are for just that.

With an AR it doesnt matter much since you can flip the sights down out of the way, I do prefer co witnessing though because it helps with initially trying to get dots sighted in and it also is harder to see your sights when theyre hugging the bottom of the red dot tube. just my 2 cents though

I also typically run AKs where lower 1/3 is typically the best co witnessing youll get and also the sights dont flip down so it would suck if they were in your line of sight 24/7

I do not see the point of running fixed irons and a red dot. To me, the point of having a red dot is to be able to see more of the target while shooting.

If you want your irons to be easier to see, get a fiber optic front post and it is just as easy to see as the red dot.

So IMO -- Red dot and irons folded down, or fixed irons and no red dot. Thats how I equip my rifles.

Except thats not always possible, like on the AKM platform for instance. For ARs sure I agree.

True, I was thinking about ARs and even pistols. I only run the non-led RMR's on my pistols too, so theres no fear of it suddenly not working.
Yeah my G19 with an RMR has tall sights and its like a 1/3 cowitness. I also got the non adjustable one so it just works when i need it to and i dont have to dick with it.

Doesn't what witness you use depend on the mount?
yes theyre different heights, and thats what dictates the absolute or co witness

Ive got the RMR with the green triangle. It makes it easy to hit targets near or far with no irons at all. I was shooting a gong at 85 yards yesterday with my glock 21. I like the RMR way more than I thought i would, and since it runs on fiber optics and tritium, it works day or night with no batteries

That's what I thought.

If you have an FSB I would go 1/3, if both flip down, go with absolute.

I don't co-witness anything b/c the irons, are a totally separate sight from a red dot... I get into this in my AR class.. I'm not going to write it all out, WAYYY to much explain, but both sights should be zeroed separately, and it dosent matter where the red dot is in relation to your iron sights.

Absolutely. But knowing what you want before buying the mount and red dot is smart. Don't be the idiot that just moves the dot on top of your sight and put the rifle away.

I like idea of absolute with both irons and dot sighted in different. I wonder if the red dot far zero is at 200yd and the irons are set at 100 yd far zero would the red dot be a pumpkin on the post or irons at a 6 o'clock view with red on top. May have to look into that. Thanks for the help.

Does that sound right or am I off base having 2 different zero 1 for iron and 1 for red dot.
