does anyone know if the feds save the background check information on the nics when you complete one and if so for how long?

does someone run in to trouble when purchasing multiple guns in short periods of time?

The law is that they aren't supposed to save it. We all know they do. As for buying multiple guns in a short period of time? There's nothing illegal about that. If so, I'd be in jail.

Like T.L. Jones said, they are not supposed to, but its a basic assumption that they do. If you look at when shootings happen they always seem to know when a shooter had a background check performed through NICS. I'm not sure if there are other methods in which they can track and detect that sort of thing, but I've always just assumed its because they have a good idea of who has what at what times.

And there is no trouble to buying multiple guns in a short period of time. You can by 1 or 50 guns all on the same background check if you wanted.

Yes there are. Record keeping for firearms is meticulous when done properly and I'd venture to say 95% of the companies and FFL's do so. So anyway the process for finding the purchaser of a firearm would go something like this...

Recover weapon from shooting -> Call manufacturer with serial number -> Manufacturer provides information regarding who/when/where it was shipped -> Contact that person about who bought the firearm.

I'm not an LEO, but thats always been my basic understanding of how the process probably goes.

Tracing serial numbers from manufacturer through ffl through owners is not the same as a NICS background check database. Like I said, the law says they are not allowed to keep NICS records. But as most people, I strongly believe they do.

The statute is 18 USC 922(t)(2)©. It says "If receipt of the firearm would not violate section 922(g) or (n) or State law, the system shall-- © destroy all records of the system with respect to the call (other than the identifying number and the date the number was assigned) and all records of the system relating to the person or the transfer."

they are not permitted to do so however I have heard that they have forced some FFL dealers to allow the to go in and scan every 4473 on file.
