I can keep them all in the black at 600 with iron sights in prone at CMP with PMC bronze.

300 yards will be no issue with any non-defective off the rack AR. You may have to build or develope a load if you want something that shoots less than 4" at that distance.

I don't hunt, but for hitting steel or punching paper the AR is easily capable and the cheapest option of the bunch. And I would think certain 77gr loads would do very well for smaller game and much better accuracy if you're willing to spend the money on ammo you would for some of the other calibers mentioned.

Ill look into the heavier weight .223 for sure.

it looks like there is cheap steel cased 6.5 even though I know it wont be super accurate it should be able to hit a 8" gong at 100 yards I hope. even if not, 6.5 or 6.8 doesnt appear to be much more than .308

Everything is capable of 8" at 100 yards. It's fairly easy to find brass 308 for around .55 apiece.

I've never looked at the other calibers. Just know there's no reason for an exotic round unless you want it. That's always enough.

With a few to warm up, I'm pretty sure I could hit an 8" plate at 100 with my G19.

I can nail that shit all day long with my 10.3" 5.56

Im not fond on exotic rounds either typically. The problem is I am trying to find the perfect round, which doesnt exist.

-power between .223 and .308
-AR platform
-Accurate enough for hunting coyotes at 2-300 yards and powerful enough to reliably drop a hog humanely
-ammo that is cheaper than .308 for plinking ammo
-relatively easy to find ammo

The more I think about it the more I think I am just going to go .308, I was really wanting to keep it in a more intermediate cartridge but I think I am going to set myself up to be disappointed doing that.

I believe you can build a 308 pattern AR in .243

true, but if I am going to build out a .308 pattern AR then I will just stick with .308 since I already have another rifle in that caliber. I wanted to stick with a standard AR platform because parts are cheaper/easier to find than a .308 build.

of course going with .308 also causes me to have to go back to deciding between a AR platform or a Rem 700.

I am way too indecisive, I just need to win the lottery so I can buy one of each and not worry about it.

By the time you buy the stock, bottom metal, and rifle, you might as well just buy a Tikka ....something that will have a better trigger and barrel right out of the gate. *Likes to muddy the waters* lol

It's not a Magpul stock, but it'll knock the catshit out of the Remington 700.

I know, for my needs all of this is all over kill. But, I like projects. I have thought about just saying fuck it and getting one of the below because most of the work is already done and they would do everything I could ever want and more. The main thing I dont like about the Tikka over a 700 or savage is the limited amount of parts. Even if it doesnt need anything changed, I still like to tinker with stuff.
