Anybody in to blackpowder guns? I have always wanted one and might convince myself to buy one. It just seems like such a black art despite being the norm up until recently.

I'm specifically looking in to flintlocks....Anyone have any experience with them? If I do get one I would love to have someone show me the ropes...

Specifically I'm looking into either a 1766 or 1777 Charleville...possibly a 1795 Springfield.

I have 4 Thompson Hawkins, retrofitted to use 209 primer. One 12 gauge, but no flintlocks. I only use Goex BP.

Something about these old flint guns just speaks to me...such craftsmanship

My biggest caliber is 54. I will not shoot a deer with it again..Leaves to big of a hole, and waste a lot of meat.

Just have to be patient with the flintlocks, they go click, poof , then bang. If you lift your cheek up to early because you are used to modern guns, you will get hurt. Don`t ask how I know. Oh, and hope the wind is blowing sideways so you can see what u just missed..... good luck

If you are ever near Macon let me know. I have and shoot several. A properly timed flintlock is as fast as a cap gun.

Lots of fun. It's been a while since I've shot flintlocks, but I've owned a number of percussion cap guns. .58 ftw. Tossing big ol' lead balls under low pressure is just fantastic.

I might be getting one sooner rather than later. I think I have decided against a Krinkov. As cool as it may be it costs too much and loses too much in capability for only a 3.3" smaller package under my AK105. A $600 toy like that Charleville is easier to justify than a $1450 toy like a Krinkov.

I'd start (IMHO) with a decent rifle built by a reputable maker. I bought a fantastic .40 cal target rifle made by Tip Curtis of Cross Plains, TN walking around the Indy 1500 gunshow and I paid only $700 (it came with a nice range rod and other accoutrements). It was my first and has remained my absolute favorite flintlock. It's the top one in the pic below: Flinters.jpg
