TYR makes great shit. I run one of their belts for my battle belt.

Have you looked into AR500 as a cheaper alternative for plates?

I like steel plates in that they stop bullets fairly well. I just don't like the idea of splatter. I may just get the plates down the road a little at a time. The pico pro plates are extremely light at around 3 pounds. I don't know though. We will see.

Splatter is really a moot point when the plates are inside a carrier.

The only plates that will fit the carrier though are the protech. So ar500 plates are a moot point as well. ;)

On a side note how is the Army treating you nowadays brother?

Getting ready to roll out the door in less than 30 days with a unit that is 90% slick sleeves including the BC,CO and 1SG.

It's been a total shit show getting everything ready to go. Other than that things are just fine.

Oh shit. I didn't think there would be any slick sleeves left after Iraq and Afghanistan. That has gotta suck. Good luck and GOD bless you brother.

Tyr is top of the line kit. Like, really, really high end. I've got a few pouches and things from them, but never could afford their PC's.

Every multi-hit test that I've seen with steel plates in a vest resulted in the coating delaminating. And the spall follows the plate face, straight up, down and out, cutting through the PC.

The Kevlar idea is a good one. But I'd want to wrap over the edges, enveloping the front edges of the plate. Wonder what that would cost & weigh?

You can get old flak vests dirt cheap. The Kevlar has degraded a bit, but it doesn't need to survive the actually bullet impact.
I'd suggest over cutting the Kevlar by several inches and wrapping it. Epoxy would work well to secure it. I'd think you could get away with a couple layers in each plate strike face for 2-3 lbs.
