All that and they still issue them with open sights? At least adding a red dot would be easy. If those backwards Russians aren't afraid of change...
To me it depends...
There are collectible AKs and then there "shooter-grade."
The former should sport the traditional wood but the latter is whatever you want. I acquired one with a CAA M4-style AR buttstock and a tapco hand guard. I think that putting the magpul AK furniture on this one was actually an improvement.
