So after purging so many of my guns and giving the wife a good chunk of change I have a little bit of money left over to buy another gun ( with her blessing even!). Since I acquired an OPAP and some ammo I think I have the general BS rifle taken care of. I'm looking now at more of an MBR type of gun...mainly at the PTR-91 GI 16" and the VEPR x54R in either 16" or 20".
Both guns have the same initial cost, though the VEPR would cost a little more once it has been made the way it should look.
Mags for the PTR are almost free while mags for the VEPR would cost a little more than standard AK mags.
So far, the PTR is on top as far as cost goes, but here is where the VEPR gains a lot of ground: ammo cost. Ammo for the VEPR is literally half, or less than half, of what .308 costs. Both cartridges are about equal as far as energy is concerned.
The PTR would be more accurate, but by how much I don't know. Both would be acceptably accurate enough for my intended uses, 200-650ish yards.
Both are in the same weight category, both are very reliable with possibly a slight edge to the VEPR because it has a less complicated design.
Which is the better choice?
