Got it. Subsonic labeled ammo is just saying Fps is less than 1126ft/sec. Any 147gr will do as its inherently subsonic 980ft/sec. Same with 230gr 45ACP.

Ideally I don't want to hear the impact of the bullet and the steel. That's why I was thinking of filling a tube layered with sand and clay. I wonder if you can make one that muffles the impact.

I want to make a bullet trap for 22lr and 300blk to demo silencers. I'd be shooting directly into it. I'm thinking using a steel tube 6-8" in diameter with an end cap as the container. What thickness and length should I go with? Then filling it with layers of sand and clay. Watcha think?
