I've been a UFC fan for years but never got into all the details of the sport. One thing that was curious about was what does the "cut man" smear on the face of a fighter before they enter the octagon and what's the purpose of it?

Usually a type of Vaseline or baby oil. Supposed to help slow the cutting process down, especially in early rounds. Around sharp areas like eyes etc.

I worked for the Ga state athletic commission for a while. Got to be cage side at UFc 88.

Before the fighters enter the cage they are coated in petroleum jelly. It's to prevent cuts. Helps punches slide off instead of tearing flesh. Also help moisturize the skin and make it more elastic.

Often it is a mix of petroleum jelly and adrenaline hydrochloride.

I should be more specific about them being coated....the brow and cheekbones are where it is applied.

What's awesome is Bethe Correia talked a big game, acted like she was all that, and wrote a check she couldn't cash.

I think one of the best fights on the ticket occurred just a couple before Rowsey's Main Event.

Dileno Lopes and Reginaldo Viera put on one of the craziest displays of face punching, guillotines and blood spillage I've ever seen. Viera won the bout which served as the finals of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil."
