Just another Mossberg product it will never own..:::like everything else the make.
If I were to purchase a striker-fired, plastic handgun, this wouldn’t be it.......however, I am curious about it. I’ll fire one when I get a chance.
I had a Mossberg MVP Patrol 7.62 and it shot exceptionally well; under 1MOA with factory ammo and a 4x scope.
May daughter’s starter centerfire rifle was a Mossberg MVP Varmint 5.56 bolt action. When she was 10YOA she was running it out to 800yds with great accuracy. With 75grn handloads I shot around .5MOA with it.
I hate the 500, but really like the 590 and love the 590A1.

The biggest difference between the 500 an the 590/590A1 models is the use of a different barrel and magazine system.
The barrel on the 590 and 590A1 are significantly thicker than those found on the 500. On a typical 18″ 590/590A1 barrel, the muzzle diameter measures .930″ whereas a Model 500 will measure around .855″. Thicker barrels may increase weight, but they are less likely to bend or dent during hard duty use, plus they’re better candidates for interchangeable choke tube installation (though you can install chokes on a 500 just fine).
Model 500 shotguns have a take down screw assembly that is threaded into the end of a closed magazine tube. The 590 and 590A1 both use a barrel lug that slides over the magazine tube and is secured by a nut, a system similar to the one found on the Remington 870.
The Mossberg 590A1 differs from the 590 in that it has a metal safety and trigger housing. The 590 uses a plastic trigger housing assembly.
Is the MVP Patrol the one that can use M1A mags? I've always wanted to check one out, but have never had a chance. Seemed like a nice idea for a rifle you could hunt with in states that restrict capacity but have higher capacity available. Kind of a stealth truck rifle in places that get all bent out of shape over "assault rifles".
Good info. I grew up shooting 870s. My step dad was a police officer and my mentor on all things guns. He always told me the 500s were junk so I just grew up thinking that.
He also told me ARs were junk too which I didn’t find out how wrong he was until after his death. I was 24 years old and had been around guns 18 years the first time I fired an AR.
I figured he might have been wrong on the 500s too so I bought one. I hated the way the barrel connected to the mag tune and hated the top mounted safety more. I’ve stuck with 870s ever since.
It can use both M14 and SR25 mags. I always ran PMags in mine, they fed smoother than M14 mags.
That’s what I used mine for; a truck gun. I had the irons sighted in for a backup and topped it with a 1-4x24mm Burris MTAC.
Thanks. Sounds like my idea wasn't completely wacky. If our money ever gets better I might look into it. Right now I've picked up a 15-22 to try and see if I can relearn to shoot decently since my stroke affected the feeling in my right hand. First centerfire rifle I replace will probably be an AR though.
