I'm assuming the author calls it the rifle that changed the world, because earlier ones were handmade. Timothy Murphy helped win the battle of Saratoga by killing General Fraser from 300 yards away. The article starts with a rifleman named Thomas Plunkett killing a French General from 600 yards away. Early rifles were crude instruments compared to modern rifles and fired a round ball. How far away could you hit someone if you had to?
