Vietnam was a French colony or protectorate before WWII. When France surrendered to the Axis it became a part of the Axis powers. Japan went in to occupy. The US promised Ho Chi Minh that they would gain their independence if they would fight against the Japanese. We gave them weapons and training. Then, at the end of WWII we didn't honor our agreement and they went back to French rule. When the French went back in to reoccupy Ho Chi Minh sought out assistance to overthrow them and a communist country gladly stepped in to offer assistance.

We soon got sucked in to that war.
