Yep, people just join teams and root for their favorite while purposefully ignoring shortcomings. It's the mark of a person that ties up their self worth in their positions and opinions. Being willing to change your opinion, or question your own decisions is akin to questioning a persons "rightness", and a lot of people take offense to that sort of thing.

I don't think it's "done" at all. People just love to pick a side and identify with it. It's human nature, but you're right, it does polarize people.

Everyone likes winning and you can't win in the middle. I've been in the middle for a long time. I've even agreed with you a time or three. The "all the way" mindset is detrimental fo sho. It closes intelligent people's minds to what should be thought provoking discussions.

That's why I find that people that don't care about being perceived as a vicarious winner usually make the best and most interesting friends.
When it comes to politics there are very few that "win". And they've already fixed the game so they can have it.
Then why aren't any leaders of the black lives matter movement openly white? No one can say if we knew he was white, he never would've made it to a position of leadership. That would make them look bad, his team has to defend him at this point.
At least we moved past the "one drop" standard, now it's none.
