I picked up a Mauser last Friday. It was billed as a 6.5x55 Swedish. It won't fire because there's something wrong with the trigger. So I got it for a song. No import markings what so ever, and it's been sporterized. The stock is a Boyd's stock. I finally had some time to dissasemble it and check it out. As it turns out it's a Mexican Mauser, which means it may be 7x57. Picked it up as a project gun to rebarrel and mess around with, since Mauser actions are so sweet. But I'll be doing some research before hand.

Nice project! The rifle looks to be really clean, even if it was sporterized.

I've never messed around with a Mauser or Mosin. For that matter, I have almost no experience with pre WWII bolt guns. I'll be interested to follow this story as it develops-
This will be my first Mauser, I've done anything with. I've messed with mosins a lot. Stupid fun guns!

You make a good point. So at this junction, best thoughts would be pull barrel cast the chamber, then measure the casting? Or am I way off?
Is that how you figure it out? I hadn't ever thought of how to figure out what abrifle is chambered for, if you do end up doing that take some pictures. I'm curious about it.

You don't have to pull the barrel to make a casting, but that is the best way to do it.

I'm guessing the barrel isn't marked anywhere?

No markings on the barrel, the only markings on the rifle are that in the third picture, and serial on the left side.
