Aside from just being fun to shoot, what's the consensus on the real usefulness of a pistol caliber carbine?

From what I understand most agencies are starting to adopt SBR intermediate cartridge carbines to fill the role that a good pistol cal carbine filled. I can see how something as compact as an MP5 or UMP45 might be good in a home defense or house clearing type scenario but an SBR AR15 could do the same thing with more power. Over penetration might become an issue but there are supposedly tailor made cartridges that are designed not to pass through walls.

I ask because I am thinking about ditching my pistol cal carbine in favor of a cheaper SBR in either 300 BO or 7.62x39 fro a general purpose HD/Truck gun.

Thoughts?

I think they are cool and one of my dream set ups is a 9mm AR that takes glock mags.

I would have no problem with one as a bedside gun. If I remember right sub sonic .300 has similar ballistics to .45, so a .45 carbine should be plenty useful.

To me it comes down to:
What is the intended use?
Where will I most likely use it?
Benefits of Pistol Caliber Carbine / SBR in each instance.


If I intended to use is as a home defense weapon then I think the Pistol Caliber Carbine or even a Pistol Caliber SBR makes the most sense. The lower muzzle flash and sound differences make that one a no-brainer. If you are talking about a double-stamp SBR then you have the best of both worlds but still have to consider overpenetration, cost of ammo and the overall cost of a suppressed SBR.

I love them honestly. For me, they fill the two biggest niches, fun and practicality.
I think people underestimate their effectiveness for sd and hunting. Whenever there is a bigger and better option, the old choice seems to become totally irrelevant. I remember when the WSM's and Ultra Mags came out in the early 2000's. All of a sudden the 30-30, .270, and 30-06 were totally inadequate for deer and elk. You had to be pushing a 180 grain bullet at least 3000fps to stand a chance of killing them.

PCC's have plenty of oompf for sd, and even for hunting medium sized game at archery range.

Primary use will be in the house, but it seems that my USP Tactical will serve just as well and allow a free hand. Otherwise it's just an expensive range toy.

If I were to get an SBR it would like be an M92 PAP due to mag compatibility and cheap ammo.

To get my USC where I want it I would have $2k in it, which is ridiculous even for an HK fan. to FULLY convert it to UMP would be $2400. I am really thinking about selling it and SBRing an M92 and putting another $750 in the bank.

I'm going to be sbr'ing a CZ Scorpion EVO3, and getting a can for it. That's really the only thing out there on my "want" list.

And once the Ruger 9mm carbine has the first recall I'll prolly get one of those.

The ASR and Kel Tec take Glock mags and drums. I have 72 rd drums for the Suomi, too, but dang it's a heavy rifle!

Kicked around the idea of building a 9mm AR but prolly won't. If I did it would be a pistol with a brace. Hmmm...

I'm working on a barrel and adapter for my Suppressor I'm waiting on first. Plus I am picking up an RMR this week I have to get a mount for. I got a lot of shit in the works already. Guess I need to get back on the corner with @karlvv and try to get a little side cash.
