Modern gun for WW1

I came across this video on my youtube feed this evening....I like this guys videos for the omst part but I have to say the premise of this video is a bit silly...and his choice is downright idiotic.

The question that was asked was what modern gun would he choose to give to the soldiers fighting in the trenches of WW1....and he chose the AR15. Don't get me wrong, the AR is a great rifle. I understand his whole "it's a sealed system" idea and I agree that it is. The problem is that we're talking about the trenches of WW1. I've been to the Argonne and Verdun....that mud is a special kind of hell. The AR would be great if it was kept clean....but NOTHING stays sealed and clean in the trenches.

An AK would be a better choice only because WHEN it gets too gunked up to fire all that's required is either a swift kick to the op-rod or removing the top cover and pouring water into it. An AR would likely require significantly more to clean and get running.

A bolt gun would probably be the best choice overall though.

WWI trench warfare resulted in the awful loss of life because tactics didn't match technology.

The individual soldiers' weapons had little to do with the mass charges into machine gun nests and artillery barrages.

All things being equal, they could all have been carrying spears for that matter.

I agree....like I said it's a silly discussion to begin with...

My dad told me some of the stories my great grandfather told him about fighting in the trenches in WW1. I can't imagine a worse hell than that. He eventually was promoted to a machine gunner and he said his gun jammed quite often because of the mud.

My grandfather was in artillery in WWI but he died when I was like three. I have no idea about his service back then.

When WWII came around he was too old to serve so he joined the Red Cross and ran a camp in FIJI for the servicemen/women.

Here is the carbine he brought back.

Yeah, needless to say my grandmother wasn't too happy when he took off with her at home with three young boys.
