I'm thinking about replacing my stock barrel with a heavy barrel. I want to get into some long distance shooting. Not for game, but for target shooting. No, I am not a sniper and don't claim to be. Just want to try it. My understanding is the heavy barrels are more accurate for long range and will handle the extra heat better than the standard barrel guns. Any recommendations on brands? I have looked at Krieger, McGowen, E.R. Shaw, and Pac-Nor. I have a Winchester Model 70 Ranger in 270 Win caliber. I know I would be looking at hundreds of dollars to do it, but it should be cheaper than buying another rifle. Any input would be appreciated and any experience any of you might have had doing something similar, I would be interested in hearing about it. Thx, Mike

All that you've listed are pretty good. My two favorites are Hart and Krieger.

No matter which barrel you select, make sure that you have a good gunsmith install it. If the new barrel isn't head spaced properly, you could be in for real trouble. Sometimes you will get a deal if you work with the gunsmith to procure your barrel as well as install it.
