I ordered this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1PF308L8450011

& this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XPF30818U8459900&name=Alexandria+PRO-FAB+.308/7.62X51+Upper+Receiver+Group&groupid=2531

to end up with an inexpensive, accurate DMR rifle platform. DPMS pattern(SR-25) configuration. I'll have less than $600(using common parts on hand*)in it by the time it fires.

This is a deal!

*classic underestimation of what I had & what I actually wanted to use. $893.97 in it so far, until I save or sell off the extra parts.

I've been "working" on a AR10 for awhile... got a lower from PSA and the full lower build kit including the stock/buffer/buffer tube. And that's where my build stalled. Oh- and a few mags from somewhere that had them on sale. So basically, I have the lower end and a spare Leuopld VX-II 3-9x40.

I have no data to back it up, but I've always felt like a 16" barrel was too short for .308... just my feeling, although totally unfounded.

I've thought about the PSA 20" and 18" uppers. But haven't gotten serious enough to order one.

Any advice would be appreciated on the barrel length and upper manufacturer.

Dude... I had just bought my PSA .308 a few days before the meet down in your neck of the woods. It was shooting very well @ 200 yards. If you want to sell your lower LMK. I want to build a 2nd PSA .308 AR. :)

Well that sounds like confirmation :) Which barrel length did you go with? I'm not so concerned about accuracy, mostly about burning all the powder.

I'm thinking the 18" or 20" is the better choice, but I don't know really. One house ago I could afford to test both- now I'm stuck with one choice.

I have no proof, but I was thinking 20" would probably be best, with 18" a close second. 16" just seems too short- based solely on my personal opinion.

It's a 16" inch bbl. But it was holding the 9 ring at 200 yards with iron sights. Even a cheep scope, or red dot would make that a serious CQB rifle. I don't mind the 16" bbl, but I would like a mid length gas system. My 2nd rifle will be a PSA mid upper.
I also have a RRA LAR-8 rifle, with a 16" bbl, it shoots softer, but feels about twice the weight of the PSA. Next time I'll bring both at the next meet, so you can shoot them.

Just finished assembly. No time for pics.

The only unexpected tool needed was a 3/32" hex(allen) for the removal of the bolt catch, so I could install the mag catch. Also, selector spring & rear detent spring needed shortening 2 coils each. The Mapgpul MOE grip selector spring hole was not as deep & the grip in the CMMG AR-10 kit, & would lock the selector & rear takedown pin solidly until trimmed.

Failure to seat properly- DPMS factory 20rd mag. It was binding at the upper front, in the upper receiver. Magpul LR/SR-308 mags locked in.

Barrel extension locking lugs are shaving tiny bits of brass or copper in the feed ramp area. Polishing is needed.

Fired two, bolt locked back. Fired three more, bolt locked back. Ammo is Perfecta(Tulammo-normally Ugh!) made by Fiocchi.

Recoil isn't too bad, ejection is vigorous @ about 5'. Rifle was test fired completely dry. Shell deflector is already marked up. If you haven't seen it, the forward assist is in the shell deflector. Combined into one unit.

To recap, this is an Alexandria Pro Fab complete 18" upper & APF lower, BCM AR-15 enhanced fcg(which didn't reset after the first shot, again-dry, no lube), CMMG AR-10 receiver pins & mag catch, MOE stock & grip,

If I recall correctly, the bolt catch and the pivot pin are specific to the AR10.
Yes, also, they make an extended mag catch so it threads into the button all the way as well.

I am either going budget 18" Anderson, or an 18 Black Hole Weaponry barrel.

I am budget building a PSA AR10 right now. I REALLY want the Aero M5 receiver sets, but always miss out on spare cash when SR Armory has them for $260/set.

I hope my build, which consist of ALL used parts at the moment, runs descent.

Also, LUBE YOUR DAMN RIFLE! lol

I'm an AK guy. What is this oil you shout of? LOL!

Seriously, I will, I want to see any thing that needs attention. Oil can conceal the little things....
Flip side of that is that lack of oil ALSO causes problems. Especially on a new, tight build.

I've been thinking the same thing... and I'm leaning toward the budget build just to see what it will do.

If my build shoots with, or better than an off the rack M1A, I'll be happy.

100 to 200yds, great. If it shootswell to 400 or 600, so much the better. And I have several known quality loads to test, once I get optics.
