Ok...... Season is approaching pretty quickly. I figured I’d go ahead and get this year’s thread started. Who’s hunting, what new gear are you planning on getting, any new tactics....... Let’s talk deer hunting! 300 BLK here. Looking at getting a LPVO here in the next couple weeks for it. I haven’t decided if i’m Hunting from the ground yet this year. Blinds are just sooo much more comfortable.

Same as always, ladder or fixed stand at Henryetta, climbing stand near Pawnee. Probably just kill three deer this year, we don't eat as much with the kids all gone. I'll start with crossbow, then muzzleloader. If I still need meat for the freezer I plan on shooting one with my Mini-14, just because I've never killed one with it.

I got drawn at Sequoyah NWR for a November muzzloader hunt (2 doe bag limit) - I'm looking at it more as a hog hunt. (no limit, of course) That place is overrun with pigs, at least it was when I was there in 2017.

Mom's place at Henryetta can turn into a hog hunt real quick as well, sometimes they're in there thick, sometimes just hit and miss. I disked up food plots two weeks ago, I'll be surprised if I go down there and they haven't rooted minefields in them.

This year I am experimenting with .270 Berger 150 VLD bullets. The 7 mag kills like lightening with Bergers but my shots just aren't long enough for that thumper. After a couple tests are in, I'll be switching to my Garand for morning hunts and a scoped 30-06 for evenings using 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tips. When filling the feeders or in the rain a beater model 94 30-30 will be on duty. Any public land hunting will be with my crossbow from a Summit Viper. I have a fixed and roofed ground blind about 100 yards down a trail from one feeder, and a ladder stand over the other one. No bucks have appeared on camera, but some does and raccons are visiting daily. This camera is mounted about 75 yards from my back door, and about 50 yards from the pool on the other side if a hill.00000062.JPG00000003.JPG

I've never shot a Georgia deer. I'd like to shoot one with the Colt Delta Elite. I just need to find a place to hunt.

Disked up food plots a couple weeks ago. Did it again Sunday. Went back yesterday to spread seed and finish up. Saw pig tracks in the freshly disked ground. I can only imagine what those bastards are doing right now.....

Either destroying more ground or breeding. That's all the damned evil devils do.

Gotta get a new feeder this year. Hoping to have some time to get a piece of equipment on the property to clear out some new spots.

I had a bruiser sneak up behind me and bust me. He ran right down to my stand and hauled ass away. He was easily as big as the 2 from last year. I had the wind in my face and was sweatin like I got raped. I know where he lives now though.
They are planning a counter attack....

I went out this morning without a bow. I just climbed up in one of my stands and watched to see which way they were coming in. It was pretty active but all of the 6 does still had babies tagging along. I didn't see any bucks.

Y'all Okies have some weird looking deer.
Yeah, from the hundreds of pics my two cameras took in the last 7 days, it looks like there's more that look like this than the other kind. Honestly, the wild pigs make better sausage anyway.

I'll try to knock a couple down before cooler weather, they are smart enough to shy away for a while after you do that.

Somebody point me in the direction of a good deer feeder. Something that will hold corn for a more than 3 days and is on legs.

Academy has some automatic feeders for around $100 if I remember. That's what I would do. Make sure to get an auto though. If you try to cheap out with a "self serve" style feeder, you're gonna be empty before the night is through. Too you can set the timer to get them on a feeding schedule that lines up with when you're hunting. In theory..... They always seem to skip breakfast the day I'm in the woods.

I had a scheduled feeder last year. Bought a 5 gal deal from tractor supply. It failed at the end of the season and I had to refill it far too often.

Get the 6-hunnit pound feeder at academy. Then you can fill it once a month.

Neighbors dogs keep running my deer. I won't kill a kid's dog, but my bb pistol is getting deployed Oct. 20.

I built mine out of 55 gallon barrels. Got a kit to add legs for around 40 bucks online, Grainger supply has lids for 10 or 15 bucks. The timers, I have had one for 20 years, the other around 5.

I can't say enough about these feeder mechanisms - sturdy, made in Georgia I believe, great customer service.

Get the one you don't have to set, the photo eye will adjust it to go off hour after daylight/hour before sunset.

If you have hogs, it's a good idea to drive a couple T-posts in the ground and wire your feeder leg to it so they don't knock it over.

If you fill that barrel, and adjust your "throw" right, it'll last for months.

So-I went hunting Friday night. Left Xbow at home, ‘cuz I knew if I saw a deer I’d shoot it and blow my chance at the pig that’s been coming in at dark. The big guy above wandered about with no fear at all.....

Glad I waited. Yes, the AK was ugly, but I painted it today. Now it’s deer season.

The drought this year is fucking up the normal, predictable deer movement times. My cameras show them feeding at random times throughout the 24hr cycle. I put out a mineral block at noon yesterday and it had lick marks and bites taken out of it 4 hours later. This morning I filled a corn feeder at 6:00am and it was untouched 13 hours later.

Not just the drought, heat too. It has been tough hunting to say the least. I think this coming weekend might get really good though with the cooldown.

It's supposed to get downright cold here this coming weekend - crazy weather this year. My wife's in Salem, Mass. - and it's warmer there than in freaking Tulsa. I'm taking the Xbow out tonight, looks like the last decent evening for a while.

Need to shoot my muzzleloader a bit before the end of the month, I'll probably do that.

He's a hoss. Already broke off like crazy in early October. You need that deer. He is beautiful.
I may or may not if I get the chance. We eat deer and pigs at my house, and the wife unit has requested that I not bring any more rutting bucks home for the freezer, just does. (she doesn't really like the strong taste) I always shoot one for my folks, so I may bust him and give him to them.

But in reality, I'm no trophy hunter - really cool to see the big ones though.
