I've been riding a older Trek 10 speed.
What is a better bike for mountain (large) rides on the road?

My wife just picked up a couple of bikes off of Varage sale! Paid $25 bucks each. One is a Schwinn and the other a Huffy. Both are multispeed bikes and have only minor things to fix.

Look into cyclocross bikes. Or fitness bikes.

I ride a surly (all steel) cross check. I had changed my tires from cx tires to more pavement ones for commuting. I also added super thick tubes to help fight flats.. It rides like a road bike should only heavy in the good way. It is all about frame geometry and what makes it comfortable for you.

Other brands to check out are:
Salsa
Kona
Fuji ((nice entry level cx bike))
Cannondale (check out the lefty.. Lol )
Specialized (OK mtn bikes)
And giant (one of my faves for mountain bikes and fitness style)

Get you a 29'er with mininun of deore deraileurs. All frames are made in the same 3 factories in China regardless of the name on the bike.

Bikes have come a long way. I used to build my own when I was a kid. Scrounging frames, wheels, cranks, forks and whatever else we could find dumpster diving. I was the master of the Frankenbike. These days there are more choices in bikes than there are quills on a porcupine. From 1 speed bikes to 27 speed bikes and up!

I saw this one and thought it kinda well equipped for the price.
